Manchester Center
Vermont
History and Beauty
The Green Mountain National Forest in southwestern Vermont surrounds Manchester Center. This area offers a lot of interesting history as well as recreational opportunities.
The area surrounding Manchester has countless acres of woods and endless miles of trails. The abundance of outdoor activities includes fishing, hiking, bicycling, boating, camping, golf and tennis.
Hikers can walk along the historic Appalachian and Long trails. A section of the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail goes through Vermont where it combines with the Long Trail. The two separate again near Pico.
The Bromley Mountain resort offers year-round fun. Summer visitors can take a spin through trees and meadows on the resort's alpine slide. Chairlift rides to the top of the mountain are available for sightseers and hikers too. Breathtaking views of several states can be seen.
Only five miles to the south is the highest peak in the Taconic Range. Mount Equinox reaches 3,816 feet. A five-mile paved road stretches to the summit where visitors can see four states and Quebec. These spectacular views are well worth the climb.
Golfers can try out their clubs at one of the region's courses. The Gleneagles Golf Course at the Equinox was originally designed by Walter Travis and was updated by Reese Jones. This 18-hole, par 71 championship-quality course allows golfers to enjoy the area's fabulous scenery.
History and Art
The American Museum of Fly Fishing displays fishing-related artifacts and equipment. Included in the collection are the items owned by Presidents Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower, Grover Cleveland and Jimmy Carter. Tackle from other famous people includes that of Winslow Homer, Daniel Webster, Ernest Hemingway and Bing Crosby.
Also of interest to history buffs is the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son. The house is located less than two miles away to the south. This 24-room Georgian Revival mansion was home to Lincoln's descendants until 1975. Tours of the home are available, including its original furnishings, family memorabilia and formal gardens.
The Southern Vermont Art Center, besides its several galleries, has gardens and hiking trails. The center offers a complete indoor and outdoor experience.
Numerous events fill the summer days and nights. The Antique and Classic Car Show, the Annual Race for the Cure and Circus Smirkus are just a sampling of what the Manchester area has to offer.
