Vermont
On the Black River
Ludlow, situated on the Black River, was first settled in 1783. Many of its historic buildings still remain. This picturesque Vermont town is a popular vacation destination.
The surrounding area, including the Green Mountain National Forest provides a host of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, golf, hiking, bicycling and camping among others.
Coolidge and Camp Plymouth State Parks are nearby and offer a variety of activities as well, including camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming and fishing. Fishermen can cast their lines for salmon, trout and large and small mouth bass.
History
The Black River Academy Museum gives visitors a glimpse back to yesteryear. Displays of local items and archives show what life was like for Ludlow's early settlers.
Just a short distance away is the Plymouth Notch Historic District. This turn-of-the-century village is practically the same as it was when President Calvin Coolidge was born here.
Besides the Coolidge homestead, the district includes other homes, a church, a cheese factory, a one-room schoolhouse and a general store. Many structures have their original furnishings. Coolidge is buried in the cemetery here.
