Vermont's Highest Peak

The first settlers arrived in Stowe in 1794. The town, located below Mount Mansfield, has grown slowly, but steadily to a population of around 3,500. That contrasts the 1839 total of 513 people, 5,000 sheep.

Mount Mansfield is Vermont's highest peak, reaching 4,395 feet. The mountain has numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking totaling 44 miles. Nearby is the 260-mile Long Trail, running over the summit.

And this is just the start of the trails the region has to offer. Stowe has an award-winning path designed for walking, running, bicycling and in-line skating. The 5.3-mile route is paved and handicapped accessible.

For those looking for other modes of transportation, the Gondola Sky Ride takes visitors to the Cliff House and the trails of the new Mountain Biking Center. The center has a unique terrain park, professional instruction and high-performance rentals. Ride down or slide down the mountain on the only alpine slide in northern Vermont.

A wide variety of other activities can be found in and around Stowe. There are four golf courses and 50 indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Other Interests

Stowe is the site of the Trapp Family Lodge. If the name sounds familiar it's because since 1941 this has been the home of "The Sound of Music" Von Trapp family.

Stowe's summer events are too numerous to count. They include longtime traditions as well as some brand new attractions. The Antique and Classic Car Rally, Music in the Meadow and the ENCORE! The Festival of the Arts in Stowe is just a sampling of what the area has to offer.

The town has an extensive offering of restaurants as well. Everything ranging from elegant to casual, from gourmet to brown bag, can be found here. For dessert try the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory Tour.
