Wooded Valleys and Covered Bridges

Waitsfield is located in the Mad River Valley region. The settlement was founded by General Benjamin Wait in 1789. At one time, the area was mostly farmland - only about a third of the land was forested. The reverse is true today - the valley has more wooded areas than fields.

One of the defining features of the area is its' covered bridges, many of which still remain and are still in use. The oldest continually used covered bridge in the state, dating back to 1833, is on Bridge Street in Waitsfield. Another covered bridge, circa 1870, is located on Meadow Road.

Outdoor Fun

A variety of recreational activities can be found in this picturesque valley, including fishing, canoeing, tennis, golf, horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking.

There are several trails in the area, including four that were developed by the Mad River Path Association. The Mad River Greenway starts just outside Waitsfield on Meadow Road. The route goes along the Mad River and south to Tremblay Road. Mountain bikers can enjoy this route as well as those on foot. The Warren, Milbrook and Village paths are located in the neighboring towns of the Mad River Valley.

Golf at Sugarbush Golf Course on an 18-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., or on one of the many other nearby golf courses. These courses offer splendid scenery along with challenging play.

Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck on any number of waterways. A favorite is fishing for bass or trout on Waterbury Reservoir.

Canoeing and kayaking are available on the Mad, White and Winooski rivers, depending on the season and on Waterbury Reservoir.

Events fill the summertime, including the Vermont Festival of the Arts, a 10-day celebration in the Mad River Valley with art, music, theater and poetry.
