Walk in the Footsteps of the Past
Middlebury is located just off U.S. Highway 7, between Green Mountain National Forest and Lake Champlain, the largest freshwater lake in the United States after the Great Lakes. This region has a rich history as well as scenic beauty.
Founded in 1761, the town includes the state's oldest college building, Painter Hall. The hall was built in 1816 as part of the Middlebury College campus. The college itself was chartered in 1800.
The Green Mountains provide the perfect setting for a wide array of recreational endeavors, including hiking, camping and fishing. Numerous trails await exploration ranging from gentle strolls to strenuous climbs. Walk in the footsteps of the past on the historic Long Trail.
The Middlebury College Ralph Myhre Golf Course offers challenging play in a picturesque setting. Golfers of all skill levels can enjoy this 18-hole course.
History and Art
Even with the abundance of outdoor activities, they aren't the only game in town. History and culture are all around.
The Morgan Horse is the state animal and is thought to be America's first breed of horse. At the UVM Morgan Horse Farm visitors can get a guided tour relating the history and lineage of the breed. They have been breeding Morgans there since the 1870s.
Sheldon Museum displays depict life in 19th-century Vermont. Built in 1829, the museum was originally a marble merchants' house and exhibits furnishings from the period, hand-forged kitchen utensils, pewter and oil portraits.
The Middlebury College Center for the Arts offers a variety of performances, including musical, dance and theater. And the Middlebury College Museum of Art displays works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
