A Recreational Paradise

Chewelah, in northeast Washington, is a wonderful mix of past and present. The appearance of the town's Main Street has seen little change since the turn of the century.

Surrounded by the Huckleberry and Sleeker mountains and located near Collie and Chinks National Forests, Chewelah is a recreational dream. The warm sunny days and clear cool nights provide the perfect weather for any outdoor activity. Whether it be camping at the side of a mountain lake, playing a friendly game of tennis or picking berries, this area is just right.

Hikers and bicyclists will find endless well-marked trails to explore in this outdoor paradise. Get a glimpse of wild goats, moose, mink, elk, cougar or beaver while seeing some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state. And for bird lovers, the summer brings an array of feathered friends to the skies, including quail, snow owls and golden and bald eagles.

Water sports abound here as well. Hundreds of lakes and streams offer a variety of chances for adventure. Boating, swimming and fishing are all popular summer pastimes. Trophy-size trout, walleye, mackinaw, bass and sturgeon can be found in these pristine waters. Lake Roosevelt has 650 miles of shoreline, including cloistered coves and sandy beaches.

Golfers also will find Chewelah the perfect place to relax. Chewelah Golf Club and Country Estates has a championship 18-hole golf course that will challenge all levels of ability.

Entertainment

The summer months are filled with events that will entertain visitors and locals alike. Antique car shows, fairs and rodeos provide something for everyone. Chataqua, one of the Pacific Northwest's largest celebrations, draws more than 50,000 visitors to City Park to enjoy entertainment, food and crafts.
