The Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin
The Water Capitol of the Midwest
The Wisconsin Dells, covering 18 square miles in south central Wisconsin, has been a favorite vacation destination for decades.
In 1998 the Dells celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Circus World Museum, the 35th anniversary of the Mid-Continent Railway Museum and the 20th anniversary of Noah's Ark Waterpark.
Named the water capital of the Midwest, it's no surprise that much of the fun here involves water. A variety of activities can be enjoyed, including fishing, swimming, boating and water-skiing.
The largest outdoor waterpark in the United States, Noah's Ark, is located right here in the Wisconsin Dells. The park features two extravagant water slides, lazy rivers, two wave pools, go-carts and more.
The Dells also are home to the largest indoor waterpark at Black Wolf Lodge. Many other waterparks, both indoor and outdoor can be found in the area and offer a variety of activities and facilities.
Tommy Bartlett first brought his water-skiing "Thrill Show" to the Dells in 1952. It is the longest running outdoor show in the country and continues to operate. Bartlett is a renowned Chicago radio personality and still greets guests each summer.
The unique cliffs, caves and canyons that make up the Dells are a must see for visitors. Leroy Gates guided the first boat tour of these natural wonders more than 100 years ago. The sandstone cliffs reach more than 100 feet above the water in some spots. Wind and water have eroded and shaped these cliffs that were formed more than 500 million years ago. Several guided tours are available of both the Upper and Lower Dells. Many nature trails exist for exploring as well.
History and Entertainment
The Dells are home to some unusual ducks. These Ducks (DUKW) weigh 7 tons and were used to transport GI's during World War II. Rides are available on these historic amphibious vehicles. The Original Wisconsin Ducks now have 80 of the transport vehicles collected from around the world.
Space buffs may want to check out the only Russian MIR space station on public display at Tommy Bartlett's Robot World and Exploratory.
Special events are countless and fill the summer. The variety promises to entertain visitors of all ages. The Annual Great Wisconsin Dells Balloon Rally, the nation's 3rd largest, with more than 90 competitors from across the country should draw almost 100,000 spectators. Automotion, a two-day festival showcasing more than 700 cars, and the Wisconsin State Open golf tournament are just a couple of the events scheduled.
