Ashland
Wisconsin
Just off Lake Superior
Ashland is located just off the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. The town was founded in 1854 by Asaph Whittlesey, who negotiated with the railroad to provide an outlet for the area's natural resources. The Main Street Historic District is filled with preserved early 20th-century commercial buildings with distinctive facades.
Lake Superior opens the door to a wide array of activities, including sailing, fishing and boating. Explore the Apostle Islands, tour historic lighthouses or take a ferry to Madeline Island. Madeline Island offers tours, hiking, beaches and viewing sandstone formations at Big Bay State Park. The state park is the northern most in Wisconsin and offers camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and picnicking.
Fishing enthusiasts won't be able to pass up fishing for trout, walleye, perch, salmon, northern pike and muskellunge in Lake Superior and the many inland lakes and streams.
Parks and Trails
Copper Falls State Park, established in 1929, is named for the 29-foot falls marking a drop in the Bad River as it flows through a steep-walled gorge. The river originates in east central Ashland County and goes north, emptying into Lake Superior. This area affords spectacular scenery of this two-mile long rugged gorge. Several hiking trails can be found along with observation points with great vistas.
Hikers will find many other opportunities to explore this area, including the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Rock Lake National Recreation Trail.
These routes combine in the Chequamegon National Forest to provide more than 100 miles of maintained trails. The forest encompasses 850,000 acres of varied terrain offering views of rock outcroppings and evidence of earth-forming volcanoes, glaciers and earthquakes of long ago.
Prentice Park, encompassing 100 acres, is a refuge for deer, swans and ducks. Visitors can hike, camp and picnic. A nature trail goes by Fish Creek Slough, a natural habitat for migrating birds and waterfowl.
History and Entertainment
The Northern Wisconsin History Center has displays pertaining to the fur trade, immigration, Native American cultures and the lumber, shipping and railroad industries.
Summertime means fun and Ashland has a lot to offer. The Northland Folk Festival, the Bay Area Rod and Custom Car Show, the Chequamegon Bay Rendezvous and the Annual Polka Fest are just a sampling of the exciting and entertaining events Ashland has to offer summer visitors.
