Numerous Lakes and Streams

Waushara County is located in central Wisconsin, just 87 miles from Green Bay. This region boasts 96 lakes, more than 150 miles of trout streams and a variety of parks. Waushara County is completely rural with not one village having a population larger than 2,500.

Waushara County has more than a dozen parks offering a variety of recreational activities. Kusel Lake County Park is a favorite with swimmers and sunbathers because of its sandy bottom and shallow waters. The park also offers boating, fishing, tennis, picnicking and hiking.

Mt. Morris Hills County Park is another favorite. It encompasses 377 acres and provides fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Fish, picnic, play tennis or horseshoes.

Explore

Bicyclers will find endless miles of country roads and trails to explore. The nearly 2,000 miles of paved secondary roads offer a variety of terrain and some spectacular scenery. The center section of the county offers the most challenging riding with a series of glacial moraines and pitted outwashes, along with many lakes and streams.

Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy countless clear spring fed lakes and world-class trout fishing streams. Some favorite fishing spots include Pine River, Mecan, branches of the White River and Willow Creek. If you want to find out where some of those fish are coming from, check out the state fish hatchery north of Wild Rose. The hatchery raises brown trout, Chinook salmon, northern pike and muskie.

The area is host to several golf courses as well, including White Lake Country Club, Two Oaks North Golf Course and the Waushara Country Club. These courses offer unique challenges for golfers of all skill levels.

There are several camp grounds in the area as well as a variety of bed and breakfasts and other lodging.

History and Culture

One of the main cultural attractions in this county is the American Indian mounds located in the historic village of Hancock. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1854, but the mounds date back to 650 A.D. to 1200 A.D.

The mounds were constructed by Woodland Indians and are recorded with the National Registry of Historic Places. First mapped by archeologists in 1916, the mounds can be found in Whistler Mounds Park along the western shore of Fish Lake. Other sites are located throughout the county and are described in an article in Wisconsin Archeologist available at the Hancock Public Library.

The Waushara County Museum in Wautoma takes visitors back in time. Located in the former Waushara County Jail, the museum displays antique furniture, clothing, artifacts, memorabilia and documents collected from the county's forefathers.

The entire county is filled with summer events to entertain and delight. Wild Rose Days in Wild Rose, August Fest in Wautoma, the Blackhawk Music Festival at Mt. Morris and the Waushara County Fair are just a few of the exciting happenings here.
