Beautiful Blackwater Falls

Davis, located in beautiful Tucker County, was incorporated in 1885. Here in the Canaan Valley area you'll find thousands of acres of wilderness and endless recreational opportunities. Surrounded by the Monongahela National Forest are numerous state parks and recreation areas containing countless miles of trails for exploring this breathtaking region.

Blackwater Falls State Park has many scenic overlooks and includes the Blackwater Canyon. Blackwater Falls plunges 65 feet and flows down an eight-mile long gorge. The water got its name from its color. Tannic acids leached from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles cause the water to be "black."

Hikers can explore the 10 miles of trails. The Gentle Trail allows for easy access to view the falls and is wheelchair accessible. The park also offers horseback riding, swimming, tennis, paddle boating, bicycling and picnicking.

Several resorts in the area offer outdoor activities, including Canaan Valley State Park, a year-round resort and conference center. Encompassing 6,000 acres of land, the park includes an 18-hole championship golf course, scenic chairlift rides, hiking, swimming and tennis. Mountain bikers can thrill at the vigorous ascents and descents on the mountain.

The valley is one of the top 10 mountain biking destinations in the country. The diverse terrain and the range in difficulty of the trails shows why. Many types of rides can be found from easy to difficult, gentle to steep. Beginners and advanced riders alike will enjoy the thousands of acres of back roads and trails in this scenic region.

Rafting is popular here as well. These waters offer true adventure. White water rafting on the Cheat River provides plenty of excitement. Take a gentle float through the Cheat Narrows or a vigorous ride through Cheat Canyon. Rafters can run rapids ranging from class II to class IV. The Blackwater River offers the same excitement to kayakers.

Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the area's many rivers and streams. These waters are full of native and stocked trout. Otter Creek is considered one of the better brook trout streams in the Monongahela National Forest.
