Raft One of the Oldest Rivers in the Country
Mercer County was formed in 1837 and named after Gen. Hugh Mercer, who died in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Princeton, N.J. The county seat, Princeton, W.Va., has the dubious honor of being able to claim being burned completely twice during the Civil War.
This, the southern most county in the state, has vast recreation resources, including two state parks, forest areas, fishing, boating and hiking.
The region is incredibly popular for rafting, especially the New River. One of the oldest rivers in the country, it has been flowing in its present course for at least 65 million years. The New River was designated as a National River in 1978 by the National Park Service.
The lower part of the river, the Gorge, is said to be one of the most uniquely challenging sections of river in the world. Float leisurely and take in the scenic beauty of the land, or pick up the pace for some thrills on these world-class waters.
