Jackson

Jackson is located at the southern end of Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park is just north of that. The scenic wonders of this region in northwest Wyoming are too numerous to name. The region is home to countless opportunities for recreational endeavors. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, white water rafting and windsurfing. Grand Teton National Park Grand Teton National Park encompasses 485 square miles. This majestic landscape includes mountains, valleys, eight large lakes, several smaller lakes, canyons, glaciers and conifer forests. The highest peak in the park is Grand Teton at 13,770 feet. Hikers will find more than 200 miles of trails to be explored. Trails range in length and difficulty. Take a short walk or backpack overnight. If you want to gain some height in a hurry, try climbing these spectacular mountains. An ascent of Grand Teton is said to take two days. Guides are available and climbing conditions are best between July and September. Fishing in the park is popular as well. Brook, brown, cutthroat, mackinaw and rainbow trout as well as white fish can all be found here. Rafting on the rapids in the Snake River Canyon south of Jackson offers great challenges and excitement. For calmer waters, the Teton Range region of the Snake River affords great scenic trips. Catch spectacular views that can only be seen from the water - maybe even a bald eagle. The eagles nest high in the trees and fish in the calmer stretches of the river. Several different companies offer trips. Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone National Park was the world's first national park. Established in 1872, the park encompasses 3,472 square miles. Yellowstone is probably most famous for its thermal basins. Old Faithful and other geysers spout at both predictable and unpredictable intervals and can be found in the western and south central sections of the park. Also well known are the Paintpots. These large springs contain various colors of clay ranging from white to pink to black. Hikers will find more than 1,200 miles of backcountry trails, some of which lead to the park's main attractions. Visitors can also camp, boat, picnic and fish here. Various species of trout are the most common catch, and Yellowstone Lake has some of the best fishing in the park along with several roadside streams. Mountain bikers will find plenty to explore, and bike trips into Teton and Yellowstone national parks are available. Look Around The Snow King Scenic Chairlift takes visitors up the mountain. Hiking trails and the alpine slide wait at the top along with an unforgettable panorama. The slide descends 2,500 feet winding through meadows and trees. Some more fantastic views can be found at the 10,450-foot peak of Rendezvous Mountain. The Jackson Hole Aerial Tram takes riders 2.4 miles up the mountain for breathtaking vistas. This area has a wide array of cultural offerings as well. Dozens of galleries and museums, along with theater and dance companies, provide visitors with endless entertainment. The Old West Days Celebration, the Rendezvous Pro-Am Golf Tournament, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Teton Valley Balloon Festival are just a sampling of the exciting events this region has to offer summer visitors.  |
